Best Electric Bike for Heavy Riders: 7 Things to Check (UK Guide)

In a nutshell: the right electric bike for heavy riders has a load rating well above your total weight, a stiff frame, plenty of motor power and brakes that don’t fade. Plenty of everyday e-bikes are only designed for riders up to around 16 stone (100 kg), and past that they wear out fast. Below are the seven things worth checking before you spend a penny – so you end up with a bike that stays safe and comfortable for years.

This isn’t about fitness. Tall riders, broad-shouldered riders and anyone who carries tools or a loaded rucksack all ask the same questions. What matters is the total weight sitting on the bike.

1. Load rating: the first thing to check on an electric bike for heavy riders

Every e-bike has a maximum load – the most weight it’s designed to carry. That’s you, what you’re wearing, your bag and anything on the rack, all added together.

Give yourself some headroom. Say you’re 17 stone (108 kg) and carry a 10 kg bag: you want a bike rated comfortably above 19 stone (118 kg), not one that only just squeaks past it. A bike ridden at its limit every day goes through wheels, bearings and brake pads much faster.

The Shengmilo S600 PRO is rated by the manufacturer for a maximum load of 150 kg (about 23.5 stone), rider and luggage included.

2. A frame that doesn’t flex

All the weight goes through the frame, so it needs to be stiff and strong. Look for chunky tubes, neat, solid welds and a frame built around fat tyres – those are made heavier-duty from the start.

On the S600 PRO, the underside of the frame has been thickened compared with the original S600, which puts the extra strength exactly where the load is greatest. The rear rack is made from thicker metal too, so it’s happy carrying a proper load rather than just a lunchbox.

3. Plenty of motor power

More weight needs more power, especially on a climb. A single 250W motor – the most a road-legal e-bike in Great Britain is allowed – can feel out of breath with a heavier rider on a steep bank.

The S600 PRO has two 1000W motors, one in each wheel, with 2 × 80 Nm of torque. With both wheels driving, it pulls steadily uphill instead of one motor doing all the work. If you’re a bigger rider, this is the difference you’ll notice on the very first hill.

4. Brakes you can trust

The heavier the load, the more energy your brakes have to deal with. Disc brakes are a must, and hydraulic discs are the best choice when you’re carrying weight – they need less effort at the lever and stay consistent on long descents.

The S600 PRO has hydraulic disc brakes on both wheels, and the motors cut out the moment you touch a lever. In practice, that means short, controlled stops, even heading downhill with a full rack.

Whichever bike you go for, get the brakes checked regularly. Heavier riders get through brake pads quicker – that’s completely normal.

5. Fat tyres spread the weight

Fat tyres are a real plus for bigger riders. Their wide footprint spreads your weight over more ground, so the bike feels planted and steady rather than twitchy.

The S600 PRO rolls on 26 × 3″ CST fat tyres with a thicker, harder-wearing tread. They soak up bumps, grip on mud and loose ground, and are far less likely to pinch-puncture under load.

Tip: if you’re on the heavier side, run your tyres towards the upper end of their pressure range on hard ground. You’ll get less wear and more miles per charge – but never go above the maximum printed on the tyre wall.

6. Suspension that looks after your body

On a rigid bike, every rut and pothole goes straight into your wrists, back and knees – and the more you weigh, the harder those knocks land.

Full suspension takes the edge off. The S600 PRO pairs a double-shoulder front fork with a rear shock, which is a big part of why heavier and older riders pick it. An hour on a bumpy farm track is all it takes to feel the difference.

7. A battery big enough for the extra load

Extra weight uses extra energy, so range drops. As a rough guide, a bike that manages 30 miles on the throttle with a light rider might do 20–25 miles with a heavy rider and luggage.

A bigger battery makes up for that. The S600 PRO carries 1,200 Wh – roughly double what many everyday e-bikes have. For realistic figures by riding style, see our guide How far can you really go on a 1,200 Wh battery?

Will it fit my height?

Weight is only half the story – the bike has to fit you, too. Check the recommended rider height and make sure you can put a foot down comfortably when you stop.

The S600 PRO suits riders from about 5’5″ to 6’7″. Not sure? Drop our support team a line with your height and inside leg, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s right for you.

Where can you ride a powerful e-bike in the UK?

Worth knowing before you buy: in Great Britain, only e-bikes with a motor of up to 250W that stops assisting at 15.5 mph count as normal pedal bikes. Anything more powerful – including the S600 PRO – is for private land only, not public roads, cycle paths or bridleways. The GOV.UK electric bike rules explain it in full.

Checklist: choosing an electric bike for heavy riders

  • A load rating comfortably above your total weight
  • A strong, reinforced frame
  • Enough motor power for your hills
  • Hydraulic disc brakes
  • Wide fat tyres
  • Full suspension
  • A battery of 1,000 Wh or more

The verdict

An electric bike for heavy riders doesn’t need to cost a fortune, but it does need to be built for the job. Start with the load rating, then look at the frame, motor, brakes, tyres, suspension and battery.

The Shengmilo S600 PRO covers every point on that list: a 150 kg load rating, two 1000W motors, a reinforced frame, hydraulic brakes, fat tyres, full suspension and a 1,200 Wh battery. It’s £1,349 with free delivery from our UK warehouse in 4–8 working days, and 30 days to change your mind. Still weighing up your options? Read S600 PRO vs S900 PRO: which one should you choose?
